Position Overview:
We are currently seeking a highly skilled and compassionate American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to join our team. The ASL Interpreter will facilitate effective communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals and hearing individuals in various settings, including educational, medical, legal, and professional environments. The ideal candidate will possess a strong command of ASL, a deep understanding of Deaf culture, and the ability to interpret complex and nuanced conversations accurately.
Key Responsibilities:
• Interpretation Services: Provide accurate and effective ASL interpretation for a wide range of settings, including but not limited to educational institutions, healthcare facilities, legal proceedings, business meetings, conferences, and public events.
• Pre-Session Preparation: Collaborate with clients to understand the context and specific needs of each assignment. Prepare by reviewing relevant materials, terminology, and subject matter to ensure accurate interpretation.
• Cultural Mediation: Serve as a cultural mediator to facilitate understanding and respect between deaf and hearing individuals, ensuring that all parties are aware of cultural nuances and communication norms.
• Confidentiality: Adhere to strict confidentiality and ethical standards, ensuring the privacy and security of all interpreted communications.
• Continuing Education: Stay current with developments in ASL, interpretation techniques, and Deaf culture through ongoing professional development, training, and certification renewal.
• Client Interaction: Build and maintain positive relationships with clients, providing exceptional customer service and addressing any concerns or feedback promptly and professionally.
• Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other interpreters, coordinators, and staff to ensure seamless service delivery and support for all clients.
• Administrative Tasks: Complete necessary documentation, billing, and reporting in a timely and accurate manner. Maintain detailed records of interpretation assignments and client interactions.
Qualifications:
• Certification: Certification from a recognized interpreter certification body (e.g., RID, NIC) is required.
• Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of professional interpreting experience in diverse settings.
• Language Proficiency: Advanced proficiency in American Sign Language and English, with the ability to interpret complex and nuanced conversations.
• Cultural Competency: In-depth understanding of Deaf culture and the unique needs and experiences of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
• Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and effectively.
• Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and foster positive relationships with clients and colleagues.
• Adaptability: Ability to adapt to different interpreting situations, environments, and client needs with flexibility and professionalism.
• Professionalism: Demonstrated professionalism, ethical conduct, and commitment to maintaining high standards of practice.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Advanced Certification: Advanced or specialized certification in legal, medical, or educational interpreting.
• Technology Proficiency: Familiarity with video remote interpreting (VRI) platforms and other assistive technologies.
• Bilingual Skills: Proficiency in additional languages beyond ASL and English is a plus.
Working Conditions:
• Environment: Work may be conducted in various settings, including offices, schools, hospitals, courtrooms, and remote locations.
• Travel: Some travel may be required to different sites for on-site interpretation assignments.
• Hours: Flexible scheduling, including evenings and weekends, may be necessary to accommodate client needs.
